About

The Friends of Azerbaijan (FOA) was founded in July 2009 to provide a network and platform for British and Azerbaijanis to work together to increase awareness of Human Rights abuses in Azerbaijan.

FOA condemns the repressive regime of President Alieyev, who succeeded his father Heydar Alieyev in 2003, and who together have dominated the country for over 40 years. The people of Azerbaijan have no freedom of expression or association and live in fear of the States’ policies of intimidation, manifested through arbitrary arrest, indefinite detention and torture.

Friends of Azerbaijan work closely with national and international NGO’s, media, governmental bodies and European and International organisations to ensure regular reports are circulated concerning the Azerbaijan Governments human rights abuses and repression.

Objectives

  • Foster human rights and freedom of expression so as to encourage good governance in Azerbaijan
  • Promote Azerbaijani culture and history, and develop cultural links with Azerbaijan
  • Lobby Government bodies and representatives such as MP’s, MEP’s and the FCO to increase pressure on the Azerbaijan regime to install democracy in the Azerbaijan
  • Work with other NGOs on Human Rights campaigns
  • To work with Azerbaijanis to create change in their country
  • Work with cultural bodies to promote Azerbaijani culture
